Dr.Kalainov is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon and hand surgeon who specializes in treating disorders of the hand, wrist, elbow, and shoulder. He has been affiliated with Northwestern Memorial Hospital since 1997 and he holds the rank of Assistant Professor of Clinical Orthopedic Surgery in the medical school.

Dr.Kalainov was born and raised in Des Moines, Iowa. He received his undergraduate degree from Stanford University and his medical degree from The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He completed his surgical internship at The Johns Hopkins Hospital and his orthopedic surgery residency at the Hospital for Special Surgery-Cornell Medical Center. He subsequently finished a highly regarded fellowship in hand surgery at The Philadelphia Hand Center-Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.

He is an active member of several professional societies, including the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and the American Society for Surgery of the Hand. He has published more than 30 chapters and articles pertaining to the hand, wrist, forearm, elbow, and shoulder. He is an active teacher in the medical school at Northwestern University: medical students, plastic surgery residents, and orthopedic surgery residents often accompany him to the office and operating room. He lectures frequently at local and national medical meetings and he serves as an Associate Editor for the American Society for Surgery of the Hand On-Line Journal Club.

Dr.Kalainov has been selected as one of America’s Top Surgeons by the Consumers’ Research Council of America and as an Outstanding Physician by the Chicago Consumers’ Checkbook. He is the hand and upper extremity consultant for the Chicago Fire Professional Soccer Team. His practice philosophy is to treat each patient, as he would want someone to treat a close member of his family.
